DISSERTATION
Epidemiological studies associated the intake of vitamin E-rich foods, but not of vitamin E supplements, with significant risk reductions for neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and other lifestyle related diseases. The underlying mechanisms were suggested to include the reduction of oxidative stress as well as the modulation of the expression of disease-relevant genes by the antioxidant. Rapeseed oil is a particularly rich source of natural vitamin E (VE) and considered to be of great nutritional value because of its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and the polyunsaturated #-3 fatty acid a-linolenic acid.

IOPD members support concluding a WTO agreement as soon as possible that results in both developed and developing countries substantially increasing market access, substantially reducing trade-distorting domestic support, and eliminating export subsidies and other trade-distorting export practices. IOPD members assume that the oilseed sector will be covered during the course of the negotiations, so that producers can benefit from a growing food and non-food market, resulting from progressing liberalization. IOPD members assume that successful negotiations will maintain profitable income for producers of oilseeds and protein plants.

In crop rotation, native grain legumes have indisputable advantages and constitute high-quality fodder for livestock!
Given this knowledge, the UFOP has been promoting projects aiming at the expansion of cultivation and processing of broad beans, field peas and sweet lupine species in Germany for a longer period of time already.
The local value of rapeseed
The rapeseed crop is of high importance for European agriculture and particularly increased its potential in the EU-25 during the last few years. In 2004 the EU-25, the Balkan States and the GUS (Gemeinschaft unabhängiger Staaten – countries formerly in the Soviet Union) together cultivated nearly 22 million ha of oilseeds (Table 1). Almost 5 million ha of this area were cultivated with rapeseed.
Based on the preliminary official estimation German farmers have harvested in summer 2004 about 5.21 million tons of rapeseed, which is the highest rapeseed production ever achieved in Germany. Compared to the much lower harvest of the year before, additional 1.66 million tons rapeseed are available. Increasing demand on rapeseed oil for food and non-food applications will allow the marketing of this huge production within the next months without any problems. Following an overview on the German rapeseed production results and techniques in 2004 is presented.

Farmers looking for top oilseed rape yields year after year need to apply experience, intuition, flair and a well developed cropping concept in their management. And even all that isn't enough. Every single item has to be exactly right when coaxing best performance out of the new high-yield varieties: cultivations, fertilising, plant protection and, above all, the rotation.
Even though the Commission recognized that the TBR Complaint lodged by the EOA was justified, the Commission nevertheless did not consider that the current market situation permits the launching of legal proceedings at this time. European oilseed and protein crop producers regret this and still lacking protection, they are asking more than ever for a safety net.
