E-Fuels – Competitiveness of PtX Fuels: 18th International Conference turns the spotlight on synthetic fuels

Berlin, October 15th, 2020 – Fuels from renewable electricity are coming to the fore as an option when addressing decarbonisation of existing fleets, making this a key topic at the 18th International Conference on Renewable Mobility from 18th to 22nd January 2021.

The German and European mineral oil industry is ready and poised to help shape the transformation process by gradually moving away from fossil energy sources for fuels. This option is also a forward-oriented element from the perspective of economic policy. On the one hand, even if registration figures for electric cars reflect the politically expected success of comprehensively promoting e-mobility, over 30 million vehicles with combustion engines in Germany alone will remain a significant factor on the roads in 2030. On the other hand, new production technologies are being developed, fostering changes in the fuel mix in third countries too and at the same time offering scope for these fuels to be exported. This should significantly boost Germany’s position as a centre for technology, as the requisite solar and wind power plants could furthermore also be exported.

But how far have technology and concept development really progressed? Time pressure for climate change mitigation also determines the options chosen for greenhouse gas reduction. To date, sustainable and greenhouse-gas-optimised biofuels have served as the yardstick when it comes to contributing to cutting fuel-generated GHG. Does that mean that synergy effects must constitute the guiding principle for the reduction pathway? These questions are addressed in the conference session: “E-Fuels – Competitiveness of PtX Fuels Today and Tomorrow”

Four presentations will set the ball rolling for the discussion:

Comparative appraisal of Power-to-X processes for provision of fuels from renewable sources, Dr. Siegfried Bajohr, DVGW Research Centre at the Engler-Bunte Institute of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

The role of electrofuels in the decarbonisation of road transport, Dr. Ikka Hannula, VTT Technical Research Center of Finnland

Supply chains for e-fuels from abroad to Germany, Johannes Daum NOW GmbH, National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology

Biobased fuels and e-fuels - competition or synergy?, Dr. Ulf Neuling, Hamburg University of Technology, Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics

Moderation: Dr. Franziska Müller-Langer, German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)

Digital event

Due to the current developments within COVID-19, the organisers have decided to convert the 18th round of the International Conference into a digital event format.  The motto of the congress is: "Fuels of the Future" digital & internationally networked!

The conference "Fuels of the Future 2021" will take place as a 5-day event series from 18th to 22th January 2021. Each day of the event consists of three sessions. Further information will be available under programme. The digital conference will be held bilingually (German-English).

Your advantages:

  • Flexible and location-independent participation via PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Comprehensive and varied programme with a total of 15 sessions. For the first time in 2021, these will not take place in parallel but in succession. This means that you can attend all sessions as opposed to a face-to-face event.
  • 60 exciting lectures with selected speakers and moderators
  • Simultaneous translation of all lectures German-English or English-German
  • Meet our gold sponsors during digital and interactive coffee breaks
  • Chat function: Possibility to ask questions and exchange ideas bilaterally with moderators, speakers and participants
